What is the SANE Program?
The Louisville Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Program provides medical/forensic examinations to victims of Sexual Assault that are male or female, 14 years or older. The program began over 10 years ago at University of Louisville Hospital, and is part of our Trauma Center. The program has grown to serve patients in two locations in the Louisville area. We currently have eight SANE nurses on staff.
What is a sexual assault exam?
It is a medical/forensic exam performed by a SANE or MD for the purpose of identifying, documenting and treating injuries; collecting forensic evidence; and offering medications to prevent pregnancy and treat the most commonly transmitted sexually transmitted infections.
With the patient’s permission, the evidence collected during this exam can be turned over to police for use in a criminal investigation. The cost of the medical/forensic examination and medications given during the exam are covered by The Kentucky Crime Victims Compensation Board. There is no cost to patients for the sexual assault exam.
What are SANEs?
The Kentucky Board of Nursing website states: “A SANE nurse is a registered nurse trained in the forensic examination of victims of sexual assault and credentialed by KBN, and who conducts the examination, collects and preserves evidence, and testifies in legal proceedings. The SANE nurse becomes an integral part of the multidisciplinary team investigating the survivors of sexual assault, and should be knowledgeable in the nursing process, forensic nursing concepts, victims’ issues and legal responsibilities.” (www.kbn.ky.gov)
The Louisville SANE Program has two clinic locations. Medical/forensic exam can be performed at either the University Hospital Emergency Department or the SANE Clinic at The Center for Women and Families.
